Community Commission Project

One of our missions as a piano duo is to collaborate with composers to create new works for piano duo and duet.  We believe that music is intrinsically tied to people and places, and that new music can be incredibly powerful when it actively connects composers, performers, and community members.  With this in mind, we are embarking on a series of commissions by composers that live and work in Ottawa, or have strong ties to the city.  We were both born and grew up in Ottawa, and the music community in the city is very important and special to both of us.  All of these works will be premiered in Ottawa, and we aim to partner with some of Ottawa’s excellent music presenters to stage these premieres.  To fund these commissions, we are contributing funds ourselves, asking our partner organizations to contribute, and - most importantly - asking the community for their support.  We love the idea of music being commissioned by the community, for the community. One of the most important aspects of this project is giving our donors the chance to meet the composers we’re working with, and hear them talk about their music, their sources of inspiration, and the creative process in general.  We view our donors as active and interested parties in the creative process.  If you are interested and able to contribute, please read on below about our current commission, and use the 'Donate' box below to make your contribution.  Thank you so much for your support.

Commission I:  Kelly-Marie Murphy

Dr. Blue's Rapidly Deployable Escape Ladder

We are currently fundraising to commission a new piece by Kelly-Marie Murphy (www.kellymariemurphy.com) that will be premiered at Ottawa Chamberfest in the summer of 2022.  The piece is inspired by Joan Míro's 1940 painting 'The Escape Ladder' (see it and read about it here).  A professor of composition at the University of Ottawa, Kelly-Marie’s music is performed all over the country and internationally.  She has recently had music premiered by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and chamber/solo works premiered by the Gryphon Trio, pianist David Jalbert, and clarinetist James Campbell.  She truly is one of the leading compositional voices in the country, and we are so lucky to have her resident here in Ottawa.  When we approached Kelly, she was excited about writing a piece that explored the many possibilities of two pianos, and she loved the idea of a piece that would be composed and performed in Ottawa.  If you would like to donate to this commission, use the form below to donate any amount that feels comfortable to you.  If you'd like more information on how these commissions work, please contact us through the 'Contact' page.  Thanks for your support!
